It’s finally happening.
Donald Glover is Miles Morales as Spider-Man.
This hurts me and pisses me off so fucking bad. This reminds me of one Halloween when my I asked my nephew what he wanted to dress up as. He said “Captain America but I’m not white.” My nephew is half Dominican so he has a deeper skin tone. Hearing my 8 year old nephew say this fucking crushed ME. Like you’re 8 years old? He didn’t say it with sadness it was “as a matter of factly.” He’s accepted that he cannot be Captain America because he’s not white…that’s really fucked up.
As the black sheep geek I always found my happy place in comics getting lost in the storylines and characters. I always wanted to be the cool aunt so we bond over comic books. So his broke my fucking heart. So I told him what makes a hero is not his skin tone or race but his deeds. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white. I asked him if he had super powers and he saw a train about to crash would he try to save those people? He answered “YES of course it’s my job as a superhero.” I told him that’s what makes a hero. Having a heart, having compassion and helping others because you know you can. So I told him because his instinct is to help that means a hero lies in him! So he smiles and starts to call himself “Captain Tony” which I of course think is much better than Captain America duh.
I smile back but my heart aches. Here’s this “thing” that would bring me joy and feel like I belonged to a secret world…this same world makes my nephew feel like he has no place. He wants to save the world too!
And it’s like…..even in a a world that is essentially all fantasy it’s still considered far fetched to have a black Peter Parker? The same Peter Parker that was bit by a mutant spider that gave him super powers???? Getting bit by a genetically enhanced spider is a lot more feasible than having a black spiderman? FUCK. YOU.
But the bigger problem is my nephew doesn’t get to see himself as Captain America, Spider-Man or any of the Avengers. I know once my nephew sees this he’s going to flip! He’s going to be overjoyed. Because that’s how I felt when I first saw Storm. Because you know what, not seeing POC represented in a world filled with characters that you idolize for being “Super” human, powerful, compassionate, hero, legends..is another way of saying “you don’t exist.” In a world where mutants, aliens, mythical gods & genetically enhanced super heroes & villains…you don’t exist? So fuck you if you don’t support this.
